A “change doctor,” Lyle Berkowitz, M.D. is driven by a personal and professional mission to optimize the value of health care for physicians and patients – and he’s making significant strides through his work as a physician, informatics expert, innovator and entrepreneur.

Dr. Berkowitz is Associate Chief Medical Officer of Innovation for Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Medical Director of IT & Innovation for Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, Chicago’s largest primary care group. He has been recognized by HealthLeaders magazine as one of the nation’s top “individuals who are making a difference in today’s complex health care world” (Twenty People Who Make Healthcare Better) and was named to Healthspottr’s annual “Future Health Top 100” list of top innovators and change agents in health care. He has also been lauded by Modern Healthcare as a “Top 25 Clinical Informaticist” in 2011 and 2012 and Mayo Clinic’s Center for Innovation as the winner of its iSpot Competition for “Ideas that Will Transform Healthcare.”

An entrepreneur at heart, Dr. Berkowitz is also founder and director of the Szollosi Healthcare Innovation Program, President of Back 9 Healthcare Consulting and founder and chairman of healthfinch, a healthcare software company making “Doctor Happiness Tools.” Each of these companies was founded to improve the physician and patient experience through innovative and disruptive uses of information technology and strategies.

Dr. Berkowitz is a well-regarded speaker and noted author. He is an active presenter and panelist at national meetings, including World Healthcare Congress, Healthcare Informatics Expo & Conference, eHealthcare World and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), among others. His most recent book, “Innovation with Information Technologies in Healthcare” (Springer, 2012), provides an extensive review of what innovation means in healthcare, coupled with real-life examples and guidance for successfully innovating with health care IT. He also leverages his vast expertise with and passion for electronic medical records in numerous chapter contributions on the topic with publications by American College of Physicians (ACP) and HIMSS. Additionally, Dr. Berkowitz regularly writes for the HISTalk blog, is the author of “The Change Doctor” – voted one of the “Top 50 Healthcare IT Blogs,” – and the creator of “The High Tech Doc,” a multimedia series advising consumers how to use today’s IT to better manage their health. He is also the editor-at-large for Clinical Innovation and Technology, a TriMedia print and online magazine.

Dr. Berkowitz serves on the Governance Board of the Innovation Learning Network, the Editorial Boards of Clinical Innovation + Technology and Healthcare Innovation News, and the Advisory Boards of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems and the Institute for Health Technology Transformation. He is a past Board Member of the American Health Information Management Association Foundation and longtime editorial board member of Healthcare Informatics.

A Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine within the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, Dr. Berkowitz has achieved Fellowship rank with both ACP and HIMSS. He is also a physician consultant to a wide variety of movie, television and theatrical productions including The Dark Knight, Batman v. Superman, Transformers 3 & 4, My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Producers, Million Dollar Quartet, US Marshalls, Ocean’s 11 and 12, ER, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Dr. Berkowitz holds a biomedical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
